Foray at James Peak Wilderness

Golden mushroom peeking out from under the roots of Great Pine

The day dawned bright. After stopping by Mountain People's Coop for sundries and root beer, we left the village for higher ground. Noni driving, myself co-pilot, and Sydney and Seraph in the back seat. Two mischievous boys hiding in the cargo hold. Baskets in tow we enter the wilderness...

Coprinus atramentarius

Noni was drawn North of the path and I found him in a small ravine next to a clear pool carefully observing these beauties. Hidden among the spiny thorns several bunches of these breakfast mushrooms shine in the morning sun.

 Amanita muscaria

This is what drew him in. A patch of the Santa Claus mushroom deep red and waiting for the reindeer.

 Sacred Soma

Harvest Bounty including Sheep Mushroom, Puffball, Oyster and Porchini

The Sheep Mushroom, when prepared back at the cabin, proved to be a mild, delicious wild mushroom. Avery and Noni found them growing near the river out of a mossy bank. The familiar fragrance of this mushroom surprised us both.

  porchini living among the roots

Found under living baby pines and ancient dead ones, the Porchini found us many times along the trail. A sweet day in the High Country mushrooming...
